Prof. Dr. Syed Atiqul Haq – Rheumatology Specialist in Dhaka
Prof. Dr. Syed Atiqul Haq is a distinguished Rheumatology specialist in Dhaka, Bangladesh, widely recognized for his extensive contribution to the development of rheumatology care, education, and research in the country. He has specialized expertise in the diagnosis and management of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), knee osteoarthritis (OA), spondyloarthritis (SpA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), osteoporosis, and other rheumatic and autoimmune disorders.
He previously served as the Chairman and Professor of Rheumatology at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) and currently works as the Chief Consultant at the Green Life Center for Rheumatic Care and Research, Dhaka.
Prof. Dr. Haq played a pioneering role in establishing rheumatology as a recognized medical specialty in Bangladesh. He founded the country’s first rheumatology clinic in 1991 and was instrumental in forming the Bangladesh Rheumatology Society in 1997, where he currently serves as President. In addition, he initiated the COPCORD Study Group in Bangladesh in 2000 and became the first Chairman of the Rheumatology Department at BSMMU in 2012.
His professional achievements include receiving the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (FRCP, Edinburgh) in 2003 and the International Fellowship of the American College of Rheumatology in 2005. His academic interests focus on the epidemiology of rheumatic diseases, particularly knee osteoarthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus, and he has made significant contributions to advancing rheumatology training, clinical practice, and research nationwide.
Through decades of clinical experience and academic leadership, Prof. Dr. Syed Atiqul Haq continues to contribute to improving rheumatologic healthcare and patient outcomes in Bangladesh.
