Prof. Dr. Syeda Tabassum Alam is a distinguished Paediatric Neurologist in Dhaka, Bangladesh, with more than 30 years of experience in treating neurological and developmental disorders in children. She currently serves as the Professor and Director of the Department of Paediatric Neurology and the Institute of Paediatric Neurodisorder & Autism (IPNA) at Bangladesh Medical University (BMU), Dhaka.
She completed her MBBS from Sir Salimullah Medical College, Dhaka in January 1987. Later, she earned a Diploma in Child Health (DCH) from IPGMER in July 1991, followed by FCPS in Paediatrics in January 2006. She also completed an MD in Paediatric Neurology & Neuro-Development from Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) and pursued an international Fellowship in Autism from South Korea.
After passing the BCS (Health) examination in 1990, Dr. Alam joined government service as an Assistant Surgeon. In 1994, she joined the Department of Paediatrics at BSMMU (formerly IPGMER) as a Medical Officer. Over the years, she advanced through several key academic and clinical positions, including Research Medical Officer, Consultant, Assistant Professor (2006–2013), Associate Professor (2013), and eventually Professor and Director of IPNA in 2024.
Throughout her career, Dr. Alam has provided care to more than 100,000 patients, specializing in the treatment of autism, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, neurodevelopmental delays, and other pediatric neurological disorders. She is widely recognized for her patient-centered approach and comprehensive consultation style.
In addition to her clinical work, she has made significant contributions to medical research, publishing over 60 research articles in national and international journals. She has also represented Bangladesh at various international neurology conferences in countries including Bhutan, South Korea, and India.
Her long-standing commitment to pediatric neurology, research, and patient care has made her one of the leading specialists in this field in Bangladesh.
